STRATEGIC STEPS

The Cassovia Medi Valley cluster’s ambition is to become a strategically important investment to be included in the list maintained by the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic. The cluster’s objective is to become well-known also in the European Union, and hence acquire access to cohesion funds of the EU for its own administrative operations and industrial research. Its activities are based on the principles of ecology, health and safety, and education; this makes the cluster’s capacities attractive for anyone who wishes to verify their research in real time or conduct research directly in the CMV premises while using the CMV’s equipment.

Strategically important is also the cluster’s goal to interconnect the existing research entities and their activities in order to achieve a concentration of know-how and information which may then be used by any of its members. The plan that is equally important, even regarded as a cluster’s advantage, is to apply the knowledge and competences of its own students in practical operations and offer them with job opportunities in its own organisational structure. The knowledge capital will be freely available to all its members—internal transfer of knowledge and know-how. Equally important is to interconnect the existing entities and their activities in order to achieve a concentration of information which may then be used by any of its members.

LINE OF ACTIVITIES

The Cassovia Medi Valley cluster’s activities include creating economic and social conditions and stimulate the development of human resources with the aim of building an important cluster that will represent a joint initiative of educational institutions, self-government authorities and renowned business companies operating in the fields of medicine, cosmetics and pharmacy. Through its activities, CMV wants to support the process of continuous improvement of quality of educational and training programmes offered by universities in the region.

The cluster’s activities also focus on the support and development of initiatives aimed at making the region of Eastern Slovakia more attractive for the labour force in the medical and pharmaceutical industries and for students from all over Slovakia as well as foreign countries. CMV creates tools that support innovations, new ideas and novel products applicable in the applied disciplines of medicine, cosmetics and pharmacy. Through new innovative investments, this regional partnership that supports science and research wants to bring to the region of Eastern Slovakia new job opportunities that will create an added value in the field of research and development. In the long run, it is important for CMV to search for financial sources and other supporting funds that are necessary for the execution of its activities.

Activities of the Cassovia Medi Valley cluster in brief:

  • Creating economic and social conditions, stimulation of the human resources development aimed at forming the CMV cluster that hence represents a joint initiative of educational institutions, self-government authorities and renowned business companies that operate in the field of medicine, cosmetics and the pharmaceutical industries;

  • Supporting the process of continuous improvement of quality of educational and training programmes offered by universities based in the region;

  • Support and development of initiatives aimed at making the region of Eastern Slovakia more attractive for the labour force in the medical and pharmaceutical industries, for the students from all over Slovakia and from other countries;

  • Creating tools that support innovations, new ideas and new products applicable in the  applied disciplines of the medical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries;

  • Forming regional partnerships that support science and research in the Eastern Slovakia Region;

  • Through new innovative investment bring to the region of Eastern Slovakia the job opportunities that will create a high added value in the field of research and development;

  • Searching for financial resources and other supporting funds that are necessary for the implementation of its tasks.

The cluster’s objectives are being fulfilled primarily through the following activities:

  • Educational, science and research activities;

  • Information and promotion activities;

  • Organising and arrangement of seminars, trainings and conferences;

  • Preparation and execution of projects aimed at supporting the cluster’s objectives;

  • Preparation of analyses, studies and prognoses of further development of the region and the society;

  • Publication and editing activities;

  • Mobilisation of resources;

  • International and cross-border cooperation with similar organisations.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES

The Cassovia Medi Valley cluster’s activities in the field of applied science are carried out in 3 stages:

1. Material production

Bearing in mind the environmental aspects, the CMV’s material production is based on biodegradable polymers (plastics). The cluster’s ambition is to achieve over time the level of complex production; i.e. to produce all components by itself, and hence save costs of supplies from external suppliers.

2. Industrial production

The industrial production is based primarily on adjusting and additive manufacturing. Adjusting is further categorised into 2 types, based on a state of matter used:

  • The solid state is used for the production of medicinal products and equipment.

  • The liquid state is used for the precise formation of moulds – syringes (extrusion) and blood bags with a filter which can separate leucocytes from a blood preparation.

Additive manufacturing includes primarily 3D printing – gradual application and layering of a material to form a desired object. This method does not produce any waste. 3D printing is used primarily for the production of prototypes, but in smaller quantities it may also be used for mass production.

3. Project completion

The Cassovia Medi Valley cluster currently offers in the market 2 final products:

  • Lasers

  • Diabetic footwear.

Since the cluster does not yet conduct its own research at all production levels, some of the components are purchased from external suppliers. For example, CMV purchases optical solution for lasers, but uses its own software.

APPROACHES

Success of the Cassovia Medi Valley cluster is based on a multidisciplinary approach. It combines bioengineering, biomedicine, creative industry, artificial intelligence or even software engineering. The cluster stimulates and supports regional stakeholders in order to achieve exceptional production, competitiveness, employment rate and social values. The outputs of the activities performed by the Cassovia Medi Valley cluster will include the production of human capacities, establishment of new study branches and forms in the education sector, as well as interconnection of educational, research and scientific activities with entities operating in those fields and end users. Activities of the Cassovia Medi Valley cluster are carried out in compliance with Horizon 2020 (Research and Innovation Programme) and a related initiative in the field of scientific research – Horizon Europe.

What is Cassovia Medi Valley?

Cassovia Medi Valley (CMV) is a cluster of subjects based in the Eastern Slovakia Region; it includes universities, research institutions, healthcare facilities, enterprises and regional self-government authorities. CMV's primary concern is to coordinate research, scientific, developmental and innovation activities performed by entities engaged in a regional partnership. CMV facilitates creating a new level of sustainable regional cooperation among highly successful organisations that share the vision of transforming the town of Košice and the Košice Self-Governing Region into a scientific, research and innovation area with an ambition to achieve the level of its national, European and global partners. The key idea of the cluster is to become a centre for the support and application of knowledge and information possessed by the young generation in the field of medicine, pharmacy and cosmetics.
